Why I Have A "Dudetality"...

I’ve been told by some men that I have met that I “think like a dude”, and that statement made me laugh, because I do have a “dudetality”. I am surrounded by women that have a “dudetality” and that’s alright! For those that don’t know me, I am outspoken and opinionated. I am very direct and at times I don’t have a filter between my brain and my tongue. I understand that it’s not what I say, but how I say it, however, I feel like people are coddled too damn much at times and they need to hear it straight with no chaser. Why pretty the words up or delay the blow? Some people try to play dumb and act like they don’t know and/or understand the words that are coming out of your mouth, especially if you’re being “nice” about it. Some people need to hear it in a rough manner in order for them to see the stupidity of their ways. For example…a few years ago I remember coming home and one of my sister’s girlfriends had stopped past for a visit. I did not care for this girl, so when I came in, I ...

Excerpt from Sassy's Rules of Dating

Excerpt from forthcoming book... Sassy’s Rules of Dating 2009© SassyScribe (Saundra E. Harris) Saphari Books, Inc. The first rule of dating is to go on the date with no expectations. We as women set ourselves up when we go on a date with this mindset. Keep an open mind. Be charming and friendly. Do not send a representative in your stead, be your self, because any act or sham will come out later. Again this is something that took me four years to learn. When I date, I go on the date with one expectation, and that is to have fun. I enjoy the food, the conversation, the laughter, or whatever it is he has planned for the evening. Even if there is no love connection, I have opened up my life to a possible new acquaintance. There are some tried and true questions that one should ask on a date, most especially a first date. Truth be told, some questions should’ve been asked in advance. I firmly believe that when you meet a person, you can find out some things in the first twenty minutes o...

Dating Is Easy...

God blessed I love FB and all other social networking sites, because it allows me to be Sassy and speak my mind on topics I love... but most importantly it is a vessel that is allowing me to speak to women about their hangups and stupidty when it comes to men, dating, sex, and relationships. Yes, I said stupidity...it looks as if some of them are getting dumber and more desparate as they get older. You know when I hear them saying the same things over and over adnauseum it makes my teeth itch. Why? Why is it that women have not learned from their mistakes? Why are they still asking the same damn questions over and over...how do I know if he likes me, is he only after sex...why is he lying to me, why does't he want to spend time with me...WTF I can't take it anymore...Ladies, dating is so very easy...we have been blessed with a third eye and an uncanny intuition that talks to us everyday. Not just on matters of the heart but on all matters that involve, money, our children, our ...

Sign O’ the Times…

In 2006 Senator Barack Obama announced his candidacy to campaign for the 2008 Presidential election. The world witnessed the outcome of such an historic moment, and as an African American I was never more proud than if he was a member of my family. It showed me that after eight years of idiocracy and nepotism and just bad decisions coming from the GOP and the Bush administration, that the nation was ready for a change. The nation was abuzz with the fact that there had not been such a ground swell of support for a presidential candidate since President John F. Kennedy. Slowly, the old guard began to see that this young Black man was representative of what many felt…and they believed that he was the change we all needed. However, the right-wing had a field day, calling President Obama a rock star, and then when he went on his European tour prior they dubbed him the Messiah. At that time I shrugged off all comments about Obama being the Messiah, or when folks referred to him as “the secon...

RSVP...What It Means & Why Its Important

Spring time is here and summer is upon us! We all enjoy spending time with family and friends and this is the time of year where we can begin to plan our spring/summer events. For those that are parents, they are beginning to plan their Prom parties and Graduation events for their high school/college students, while others may be planning weddings, bridal showers, and baby showers. However, no matter what you are planning, I thought it would be great to remind everyone about invitations that they may receive and responding to said events. That’s right! I am sure we all know what RSVP means, but for those that do not it is French for répondez, s'il vous plait, translated in English it means PLEASE REPLY. I am not sure why, but that acronym and that statement, mean the same to me, but what I have learned over the years is that most people do not care to reply and often give the old excuse of “I forgot”, “I didn’t get the invitation”, etc…which are so pat and useless that when I hear ...

Marriage and the Black Community

Three years ago I read an article in the Washington Post by Joy Jones entitled “Marriage is for White People” and the article talked to adolescent children who claimed that marriage was for white people. It went on to state various statistics, i.e. since the 1960’s the marriage rate for African American’s has continued to drop. Statistics such as this and others of its ilk about Black women and the Black community prompted me to ask why is it that marriage is not preached, instilled, taught, or encouraged in our community. Having grown up in a two parent household, whose parents are still alive and together, I witnessed love, struggle, trials, and tribulations. I witnessed infidelity and counseling, and two people working together to create, grow, build, learn, and love---together. It is the reason why I believe in the sanctity of marriage. I believe in standing before God and repeating vows to merge your lives into one. I believe in the sacrament of the vows. What I don’t believe in, ...

Why Women Are Leaving Men for Other Women

Cynthia Nixon did it. Lindsay Lohan's doing it. TV shows are based on it. Is it our imaginations, or are wives and girlfriends ditching their men and falling in love with other women? New science says that sexuality is more fluid than we thought. Lately, a new kind of sisterly love seems to be in the air. In the past few years, Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon left a boyfriend after a decade and a half and started dating a woman (and talked openly about it). Actress Lindsay Lohan and DJ Samantha Ronson flaunted their relationship from New York to Dubai. Katy Perry's song "I Kissed a Girl" topped the charts. The L Word, Work Out, and Top Chef are featuring gay women on TV, and there's even talk of a lesbian reality show in the works. Certainly nothing is new about women having sex with women, but we've arrived at a moment in the popular culture when it all suddenly seems almost fashionable — or at least, acceptable. Statistics on how many women have traded ...

The ABC’s of STD’s: When Does the Condom Come Off?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SassyScribe Media Entertainment P.O. Box 232 Pasadena, MD 21123 sassyscribemediaent@yahoo.com The ABC’s of STD’s: When Does the Condom Come Off? March 4, 2009, (Baltimore, MD): Sassy and Dlyte discuss this controversial topic of when to remove a condom. Is it 6 months after marriage, one year after or is it ten years after your first negative HIV/AID’s test? Why the cases of African American’s are higher than other races, and why are African American women contracting various STD’s, is it due to unsafe sexual practices or is it rampant promiscuity? Tune in Thursday, March 5, 2009, at 9:00pm EST / 6:00 PM PST on www.blogtalkradio.com/sassyentertainment and call in to share your thoughts to 646.716.7414. “The percentage of African-American cases has been increased over time. Of all AIDS cases diagnosed in 1985, 49% were African-American. By 1996, this proportion was 83%. In 2007, the proportion of all AIDS cases that were African-American was 82%, and of HIV cases...

When Does The Condom Come Off?

In light of the recent events between Rihanna and Chris Brown, I felt this needs to be discussed. Allegedly Chris contracted herpes from Rihanna and this is the reason his camp gave for his physical abuse towards her... I am not saying that what he did was right, because I do not advocate a man hitting a woman, however, if I were in his shoes, I would be upset as well, and most likely physically violent..afterall, herpes is something you live with forever. Maybe she is the only woman he has been with, who knows, or maybe one of his groupies gave it to him...not sure, but because of this and the fact that OUR community has the highest rates of STD's and HIV/AIDS cases... There are still supposedly grown men and women who are still in this "he/she looks clean" type of thing, as if their eyes can scan their bodies like Superman with the infared powers and see diseased cells within a person's body...NOT! So does the condom come off after 3 months, 6 months, a year...after...

Why Do Sista's Hate on Each Other & Give Out Bad Advice

I am a huge fan of Steve Harvey! I love his morning show and I thoroughly enjoy his Strawberry Letter segment, but everyday, it’s a different woman allowing a man to keep his foot on her neck. I constantly find myself laughing and shaking my head, because I find it funny? Is it really that important to be in a relationship? I know that no one wishes to or wants to grow old alone, but damn, what happened to have self respect? Over the weekend, the girls and I went out for a drink and we were talking about how long it takes women to “figure” it out. Why is it that some women have yet to understand themselves and/or know their own power? I told them that a friend asked me why women gave each other bad advice all the time…honestly, we didn’t know, because our sect is very outspoken and at times “inyourface” with our opinions. Added to that he asked why do women hate on each other? It’s as if the minute a woman thinks that there is a possible chance of “hooking up” or getting themselves...

Mom & President Obama

Wassup! I know it’s been a minute since my last blog…hell, I am even noticing that I am not writing as much as I used to. But I just wanted to briefly share the emotional ride that I began on January 16, 2007 This past week was an exciting week for me because of two reasons. The first reason is that my mother turned 70 on Saturday, January 17th, and my sisters (Carian, Judy, and Stacey), my brother (Billy), and my father (Sam) all threw her one hellacious surprise birthday party. It also reminded me that some of my cousins and some very dear friends have most recently lost their mother, which made having the party for my mother more poignant for us. We are thankful and blessed that God has given her to us thus far. We rented a banquet room at Snyder’s Willow Grove Restaurant, and 115 guests dined on filet mignon and broiled crab cakes. My cousin’s Sheila, Stanley, Curry, Lisa, Karen, Tink, and Craig commissioned a cake for my mother…it was a snow white owl sitting on a branch atop a mo...

New Year...Same Mind Set...

Happy New Year…!!!! Amazing how long its been since I have blogged. I have really and truly been enjoying myself and taking time out for new friends and family members. The holiday season is my favorite time of year because everyone, despite the rough economic climate, was still filled with such joy! And that is what I truly truly love about this season. Although this is a new year, I still see and I am reading that people are still now willing and/or are unable to change. Why is it as this year moves into 2009 and we have a fabulous new President…our first African American President that woman are still relegating themselves as second best when it comes to men??!?!?! I cannot begin to tell you how sad it makes me…now I know the statistics that are out there: 44% will never marry Black women most uncoupled women on earth The older a woman gets the more likely she is to date/become involved with a married man Older women are more desperate There are not enough good men around To that I ...
